The PCNL procedure

PCNL stands for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove kidney stones that are too large or complex to pass on their own. It involves creating a small puncture in the back to access the kidney and remove the stones. This procedure is typically recommended when other treatments like shock wave lithotripsy or medications have been unsuccessful.
  • PCNL is typically performed with the patient under general anaesthesia.
  • During this procedure, a small tube called a catheter is placed in the bladder. The bladder catheter drains urine from the bladder and remains in place with the use of a balloon.
  • Another catheter is placed into the ureter. A contrast, or dye, may be infused through this catheter to provide a better view and show the exact stone location. This facilitates access to the kidney while your urinary tract is visualized using x-rays or ultrasound.

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery used to treat urinary problems that are caused by an enlarged prostate.

An instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the tip of your penis and into the tube that carries urine from your bladder (urethra). The resectoscope helps your doctor see and trim away excess prostate tissue that’s blocking urine flow.

TURP is generally considered an option for men who have moderate to severe urinary problems that haven’t responded to medication. While TURP has been considered the most effective treatment for an enlarged prostate, a number of other, minimally invasive procedures are becoming more effective. These procedures generally cause fewer complications and have a quicker recovery period than TURP.

Pyeloplasty

Laparoscopic pyeloplasty is a way to perform reconstructive surgery of a narrowing or scarring where the ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) attaches to the kidney through a minimally invasive procedure.

This operation is used to correct a blockage or narrowing of the ureter where it leaves the kidney. This abnormality is called a ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction which results in poor and sluggish drainage of urine from the kidney. UPJ obstruction can potentially cause abdominal and flank pain, stones, infection, high blood pressure and deterioration of kidney function.

When compared to the conventional open surgical technique, laparoscopic pyeloplasty has resulted in significantly less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay, earlier return to work and daily activities, a more favorable cosmetic result and outcomes identical to that of the open procedure.
