What is Hematuria?

Hematuria is the presence of blood cells in the urine. Hematuria can be classified as either gross or microscopic.

  • Gross hematuria occurs when there is enough blood in the urine to be visible to the naked eye. It can turn toilet water a pale pink or bright red color.
  • Microscopic hematuria occurs when there is a small amount of blood in the urine, only visible under a microscope.
  • Dipstick hematuria refers to a positive result on a urine dipstick test due to chemical oxidation, which may or may not indicate the presence of actual red blood cells.
